Boyle's law is an experimental gas law that relates to the pressure and volume of a fixed mass of a gas approaching an ideal gas when the temperature is held constant. This law is also known as the Boyle-Marriott law, named after scientist Robert Boyle, who experimentally confirmed and published the pressure-volume relationship. French physicist Edme Mariotte later discovered the same law independently of Boyle.
The law in modern formulas states that when the temperature of a sample of an ideal gas is held constant, the volume and pressure of the gas are inversely proportional.
