Pipe Friction Loss:
Common pipeline loss and its calculation method

1. Friction loss

Friction loss refers to the energy loss caused by the friction of the pipe wall when the fluid flows in the pipe. Pipeline friction loss can be calculated using the Darcy-Weisbach formula:

hf=fL/D×V^2/(2g)

Among them, hf is the loss of pressure in the pipeline, f is the friction coefficient, L is the length of the pipeline, D is the diameter of the pipeline, V is the flow velocity, and g is the acceleration due to gravity.

2. Elbow loss

Elbow loss refers to the energy loss generated by the fluid when it flows through the elbow. According to the ratio of the radius of curvature of the elbow to the diameter of the pipe, the elbow is divided into a long radius elbow and a short radius elbow. Elbow loss can be calculated with the following formula:

hL=(K×V^2)/(2g)

Among them, hL is the elbow loss, K is the elbow coefficient, V is the flow velocity, and g is the acceleration due to gravity.

3. Valve loss

Valve loss refers to the liquid energy loss caused by the valve itself when the fluid passes through the valve. Valve losses can be calculated using the following formula:

hL=(Kv^2)/(2g)

Among them, hL is the valve loss, Kv is the flow coefficient of the valve, and g is the acceleration due to gravity.

4. Other losses

In addition to the above three losses, there are other loss forms in the pipeline, such as pipeline inlet loss, pipeline outlet loss, wall friction loss, etc. These losses can be calculated by corresponding calculation formulas.
